From this vantage point, a depression and a modest rise are evident, corresponding respectively to the moat and the earthwork embankment.<\/h4>\n

In the terramare, the moat was generally run by water derived from a nearby river or stream or fed by wells that reached the water table. It could reach considerable dimensions (up to 40-50 metres wide) and also represented a valuable water reserve for the life of the settlement. In some terramares, it has been noted that a system of canals branched off from the moat to irrigate the nearby cultivated fields. The defensive system was completed by embankments often built with the earth from the excavation of the moat, contained by wooden structures such as palisades or 'gabions'.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n\t\t

In Montale<\/strong> the moat was recognised in the 1996 - 2002 excavations. The stratigraphy found within it documents its construction at the time of settlement or shortly thereafter. It reached a width of 40 metres in places and a depth of approximately 3 metres. With the abandonment of the terramara, it was gradually filled in by alluvial deposits. During the Etruscan and Roman ages it was no longer visible. In the Middle Ages, at the same time as the construction of the castle<\/strong>a new perimeter ditch was dug, partly coinciding with the Bronze Age layout.<\/h4>\n

The defensive rampart, identified in the 19th-century excavations, had impressive dimensions: a maximum width at the base of at least 10 metres and a preserved height of two metres. The original elevation must have been higher, however, and in all probability a palisade stood on top.
